STATS Week IX

INTRO

Some stories write themselves.

Literally.

This was supplied to me by a 3rd party .... definitely one of my favourites of the 1st half of the season.

The story goes.....

One night at the legion, some guy named Polny was openly bragging about how The Sons of Pitches deserved to win the beer cup, frankly it was a little embarrassing as he just went on and on.

So in an attempt to shut him up Pully said, “Polny step up or shut up, stop bragging about taking the cup around the world, if you take the cup to three cities ( if there are three cities that will let you in) I will donate $50.00 to Help the Kids."

Well Polny being the shy, quiet, non-competitive guy he is, spit his beer out, got up, walked over to Pully (you could hear a peanut drop from Paul’s hand), and said, "start saving your beer bottle money, cause you drink a lot of beer….".  Clearly, Polny’s not so bright in witty come backs.

Anyway, as it goes three cities let him in and the beer cup was pictured with lovely ladies from across Canada.  So it began, Polny now, being shy, non-competitive and all, said anyone that takes the beer cup and does something interesting to it……no not that………he would as well put $50 towards Help the Kids and hope with Pully’s inspirational challenge others would have some fun and donate a few bucks towards a very worthy cause.

Without hesitation Pully named Help the Kids, honored his commitment, recognized others for their efforts, takes no credit, and has clearly started something I truly hope will last for years, you are a good man Pully.

So to date $100 will be donated to Help the Kids,  and we hope the challenges continue even if it’s for just a few bucks, every dollar will count, let the beer cup live on, by the way thank you Doug and Rob for starting The Beer Cup  in the first place, Lets pay it forward!!.

P.S. It was overheard when Chris presented Dave with the framed $50, Polny commented “ Damn Right I Win!!!”

Polny & Pully (try saying that 5 times fast) had one of those "This is what the league is all about moments".  They took an opportunity to direct the humour at each other AND themselves.  They also involved a charity that is near and dear to us all AND set the framework for an ongoing donation opportunity.

$50.00 isn't going to break the bank.  But if we get a $50.00 donation 6 times over the course of a ball season that puts a kid in baseball.

How the Pully/Polny Challenge works:  Dave has offered to follow Pully's donation of $50.00 with a $50.00 donation of his own should the team that held the Beer Cup choose to do something "novel" with it or with a facsimile.  It can be travel, it can be pics, it can be anything, legal, not dangerous and funny.  The Beer Bros., Gord Dol took a representation of the Beer Cup with him Prague and Eastern Europe a couple of weeks ago and I believe that Polny is ponying up his fifty based on that.  This puts the Beer Bros., squarely on the hook for the next team that holds the cup and wishes to step up to the challenge.

The only stipulation is that there be evidence that I can print!!!

Here's Gord and his daughter in Venice and Prague with the beer cup photos.  He didn't want to risk the full international travel.  I respect that.  You can tell they're away because Gord wouldn't be caught dead with that hat in Canada.  :)

The Blues Brother's have the rights to the cup now, if they don't share in the antics, the next team to win it can do something creative to get $50.00 out the Beer Bros. pockets and into the HTKP coffers.

QUICK NOTES:

  • No rain outs!!!  But it was touch and go with Tuesday's field conditions.  The good news is that our new notification process worked perfectly.  And, thanks to contributions from Dave Fleming, we now have the ability to clear a fair bit of water from the fields should there be people available prior to the games to do the labour.
  • We're down to a mere 36 players remaining who have hit in each game of the season!
  • And the run in every game list is down to the final 7 of players who have scored in every game!

The Beer Cup

This team is really good at capturing and keeping this trophy!

The Beer Cup is in its 2nd year.  Last years champs, the Dodge City Rounders retained the Beer Cup to start the season and defended it twice by beating the Blues Brothers and the Brew Jays.  The Sons Of Pitches then defeated Dodge to take it over before losing it to the Rusty Rebels.  The Rebels were defeated by the Tap Masters.  The Tap Masters, who waited for a year to play for the cup were only able to retain it for a single game as they fell to the Beer Bros. The resilient Beer Bros. beat the 1st place Hot Tub Woody's to become the second team to retain the cup. However, their ownership wouldn't last the week as they fell to the Blues Brothers.  The Blues Brothers would then  defend against the Tap Masters and most recently by beating the 1st place Dog Catchers!

The holders of the Beer Cup at the end of the season receive both the cup and 12 beer tickets at the banquet.

Next week the Blues Brothers will try to defend against the Draft Kings.  Good luck!!!

STATS
Team
The Sliders are the only team not to have yet completed their first half of the season (11 games), but regardless of what they do, The Woody's and Tap Masters share the best 1st half at 8-3.  Congrats!

And as the 2nd half crawls to a start, the Hot Tub Woody's start where they finished and share the 1-0 lead with numerous teams.

Baseball standings.

11 of 15 teams are scoring easier than the average club did last year.

The 'reverse standings' showing everyone's max potential points that they could still achieve.

Team batting averages....or the "Who Can Catch The Dog Catchers" category

Your week 9 Power Rankings.  Lots of jostling in the middle.

So....If my calculations are correct, the Units could be eliminated with a win and a Dog Catchers loss next week.  I have to do some research....but its right around the same time the Grisslies were eliminated last year.

Individual.

Hello Laurier Plante!  Enjoying your season?

And now its starting to look like it has the potential to be a batting race!  And don't look now.....but its time for Scotty Barton to make his move!

Jeff Dancey!!!  Off to the Q2 races!

What a great list this is turning out to be!  Excellent rookie crop.

So....this is ALL of our Sophomores.  No one under .500, well done lads.

How did we survive this crew as rookies?  11 over .700

Oh yeah, total respect for Laurier, I thought he'd have a good year.  But did I see leading in runs after the 1st half?  Nope!  Way to go!

There are still some possible different outcomes for Q2, but it will take some magic.  It looks to be Dog Catcher sweep in this one.

There's no doubt this will go to the wire.

Yeah, there's some great stories in this list.  But as long as both DeLands stay on the list, nothing else matters!
