STATs
As usual we'll highlight some individual stats and do the game reviews, but this week we're going to add more team oriented stats. Last year was my first doing stats. I can't say if things I saw were trends or flukes because there was no historical basis for them, but I'd like to see which if any of these things repeats....
1. The Dusty Cleats (12-0) had the best 1st half record and made the final.
2. The Dusty Cleats (10-2) and Grisslies (10-2) tied for the best 2nd half record, both made the final.
3. The Dusty Cleats (408) had the most runs scored and made the final.
4. The Grisslies (237) had the fewest runs against and made the final.
5. These two finalists were the only two teams that had positive run differentials of +100, the Dusty Cleats (154) and the Grisslies (107). Next closest was +59.
The Cleats were dominant all year. The Grisslies had a terrific second half but didn't secure second place until the last day and needed help from the Woody's, Stiffs and Wild to get in the back door. It was easy to view the Grisslies as a non-threat over the last week, but you would have known they were dominant if you looked at their last 12 games.
The challenge here is to find this year version of the Grisslies. Who is having that under the radar second half, maybe coming from back of the pack and starting to put up numbers. I'm not talking about the Red Dogs, Joints, Brew Jays or Dodge. Not yet anyway. Those teams are candidates to be the #1 fav heading into the playoffs. I'm looking to find the #1 dark horse that everyone is missing. The early candidates for me, before looking at the stats, are the Beer Bros., Hurtin' Units and Grisslies. But the truth is, there is enough baseball left for everyone to build a solid second half. As of now, no one has been eliminated from finishing in any spot; when that starts happening, I'll start the "projected order of finish" table.
Okay....here we go!
First lets look at the standings just to get the sequence of team....
The cream has risen. We have 4 established teams at the top who look to be in a battle to the finish of the season. We also have 6 teams that look like they'll fight for the final two home field heavy play off positions. However, everyone makes the playoffs so most no one will care. But that's okay because you're still reading. Right?
Right?
Now, a word of warning. My brain doesn't work 'logically' like, say, an engineer or architect. I'm a finish line guy and my routes don't always make sense. If you're looking for logic, you're in the wrong spot, but hopefully you'll still find it somewhat interesting.
This one ranks teams based their runs scored.....There are a few notable changes from our regular standings. The biggest being that the Units and Dog Catchers are way higher than where they rank in the actual standings. Countering that are the Woody's who are well under their standings rank.
And here is a view of teams ranked by Runs against. Here you see the other side of the Woody's as they shoot up near the top. And they Units slide the other way. Meanwhile you see some other teams, like the Red Dogs, who maybe aren't where you thought they'd be.
And finally, all the teams ranked by their Run Differential. The first thing that's amazing is that only a little over a 1/3 of the league has a positive plus minus. The second this is that Jays and Tap Masters are run away leaders in this category. Then there are the anomalies. The Woody's with an over .500 record and a -23. The Banshees 5 games under .500 and only a -14
So when I looked at all these things, I was left wishing that there was some way to consolidate all these graphs into some kind of "total value" package. If only such a way existed.
If only!
Holy! Nice chart. So the first column is the team's rank in this chart, the 2nd is team name, then 3, 4, 5, and 6 are where they rank in each of those categories. the TOTAL column is a sum of that and we then sort it.
So what this one shows us is that the Tap Masters are "WAY MORE" in the conversation than the standings let you know. Also, the recent bad run by the Joints hasn't been nearly as devastating as you might think. They are still tied for the top of the charts. The Red Dogs are the highest ranked team to have a double digit score in a category, meaning they're really good in the other categories). The Beer Bros. are the lowest ranked team to be in single digits in EVERY category, meaning they're ridiculously balanced.
You've seen the current standings at the top; now here is how our 15 teams did in their first 12 games of the season.
Now what you need to decide is if this is "who they really are" or is how they're playing int he 2nd half a truer indicator?
Hopefully some food for thought on a team level. Now onto the part you all seem to like, the individual stats!
Last week we had 10 guys at .800 or better....this week the number has fallen to 7. Moon and Kolsen are both up a spot and Avery dropped 2. Anicete and Turner switched spots and Andy's average fell by .004 points but he moved up 3 spots. There are no new comers to the .800 club.
This is a great list. Barton, Kolsen, Gee are in the overall list and clearly still remain hot. The rest of this crowd obviously have their mojo going!
Schrank is gaining ground on Jerry, but the real story here are Dwyer and Farah who with dogged determination are taking their crappy averages and assaulting the at bat race!
Rick remains unchanged. Cliffy had a tiny dip but still having a great year. JT continues to raise his average, up another 20 points from last week.
Roger and Al continue to battle, but the ones to watch here right now are Robinson and Gee who have both made incredible runs up this list in recent weeks. The leaders may be too far to catch, but time will tell.
Not much to say here....these guys are pretty good. Nice to see that so many of league leaders are maintaining their high performance while actually playing nearly every game. There aren't any cheap averages in there.
That's it for stats, i'm still working on the individual "total average" one for McCarron. Its getting close.
Game Reviews
Dusty Cleats 7; Tap Masters 8
The first game of this week seemed to set the tone for a week with very few runs scored. Scott Barten and Mark Doyle led the way for the Cleats. They were both 3/3 with 2 runs scored. The Tap masters had a perfect night from Paul Doyle who was 3/3.
Dog Catchers 5; Lucky Stiffs 14
The Stiffs went up early in this one and never let the Dog Catchers into the game. The Dog Catchers only had one perfect night and that was Bob Pearce's 4/4 with a run. For the Stiffs on, only Rookie Tom Ball was perfect as he went 4/4 with 3 runs.
Grisslies 9; Hurtin Units 5
In a battle of two the hotter teams right now, defense was the order of the day for both clubs. The Grisslies had fine performances from Doug Dwyer (4/4, 2), Dave Doucette (3/3) and Gary Basso (3/3, 2). Meanwhile the Hurtin' Units sole perfect night was from Anicete Goncalves who was 3/3.
Hot Tub Woody's 12; Gruesome Devils 4
The middle of the lineup carried the day for the Woody's in this one. Chuck Cragg (4/4, 4), Jeff Handley (4/4, 3) and Chris Larkin (4/4, 1) never made outs on this night. The Devils had no perfect nights.
Beer Bros. 7; Dislocated Joints 15
The Joints one their first game with Doris Casullo back in the lineup and moved into a first place tie with the win. Steve Wynnyk was 4/4 with 2 runs and Terry Doucet was 4/4 with 1 run. The Beer Bros. didn't get a perfect on this team.
Dodge City Rounders 7; Banshees 2
Another defensive struggle in this one. The Banshees had 2 perfect nights, from Frank Laird (3/3, 1) and John Tessier (3/3). The Rounders only had one perfect night themselves and that was supplied by Keith Beechey who was 4/4 and scored twice.
Tap Masters 15; Dog Catchers 5
The Dog Catchers led this one 4-3 after 3 and they the Tap Masters blew the doors off the game. Bob Pearce (4/4), Call Russel (3/3, 2) and Ingo Bartens (3/3) were all perfect for the Dog Catchers. Meanwhile, captain Jason Bowers was the only perfect night for the victorious Tap Masters. He was 5/5 with 2 runs scored.
Dislocated Joints 7; Brew Jays 19.
These teams came in with identical records and a battle for 1st place overall. The Brew Jays were never really threatened in this one on the strength of perfect hitting from Roger Gaudet (4/4, 4) and Rod Duggan (4/4, 3). The Joints didn't have any perfect nights on this night.
Red Dogs 7; Banshees 0
This game was a forfeit due to lack of players.
Beer Bros. 9; Grisslies 12
The Grisslies got out to a 6 nothing lead and had to hang on to win this one. The Gere led Beer Bros. had no perfect performances at the plate in this one. The Grisslies only had one perfect night themselves and that was was Jeff Sagert's 4/4 with 2 runs scored.
Dusty Cleats 13; Rusty Rebels 14
The Cleats led this one 10-2 in the second but the Rebels would score in every inning except the seventh to pull this one out. The Cleats were led by Tim Sullivan (4/4, 2), Mark Doyle (4/4, 2), Kevin Boston (4/4, 1) and Troy Hope (4/4, 2). The Rebels had perfect nights from captain Hugh Armstrong (5/5, 3), Kevin Moon (4/4, 2) and Steve Grienke (4/4, 1).
