I will post a link to the news conference on YouTube later. But for now, I'm sure that most of you know that the first All Star named to the team, is now the first out. Sadly Doris Casullo came up lame early this week and hasn't recovered sufficiently to play. And rather than put the team at risk, Doris has allowed us to go with out and replace him.
So, the 2012 Tottenham Old Timers All Star team is proud to announce the addition of Jens Lepa to its Roster. Jens gives us tremendous flexibility defensively in both the infield and outfield. With that bat, Jens is a case study in continuous improvement. He hit .614 in 2009, .689 in 2010, .742 in 2011 and is sitting at .772 so far this year. Jens year over year continues to be among the league leaders in at bats and hits. Above all Jens demonstrates that you can be a good ball player, a good captain and a good man without having to compromise on any of those qualities.
Congrats Jens, welcome to the club
INTRO:
For the second week in a row I find myself with not enough time to get in everything I want to report. At the time of writing this little intro, I'm endeavoring to get the Game reviews. I'll do what I can. Cheers. Oh...if you come here for Rob's hack job, you can find that HERE
STATs:
Our first little bit of "controversy". Our league standings show the Brew Jays in 1st place. That's because it goes by points followed by a series of tie breakers. The points and tie breakers don't count however until September 1st when the season is over. Therefore, the 1st place team by 1/2 a game remains the Dislocated Joints, despite a 2 loss week.
Our league site, of course, shows the top 25 hitters. Here we're looking only at the elite of the elite; the hitters at .800 or better. Its hard to even chock out the words that Scott had a bad week as 41/44 is still obscene. However, there has to be at least a glimmer of hope for the other guys on the list.
The 1st 6 games are closed off and this won't change.
The 2nd Quarter of the season (games 7-12) is also closed off. What a run by Kevin Moon! In fact, we had 5 guys over .900 in this quarter as compared to 2 in the 1st quarter. The weather warms up and so do the batters.
YES!!!!!!!! It took 10 weeks but I wormed my way onto a list! Okay, this only represents one game and there are another 17 guys who are also 1.000 at 3/3. But I don't care. I'm going to enjoy it for a week. Who the heck is that Hayward guy?
Jens & Timmy have been going back and forth on Hits for a few weeks now. But with 6 guys within 3 hits, this is still wide open.
Jerry is still the leader in ABs, but Timmy closed the gap a bit. Its going to be tough for anyone to catch them, but if it happens it'll be someone from the Brew Jays is my guess. With all their offense, the will get more ABs than the average team.
After a week off the top of this list, Al took the lead back. But he has company! Roger Gaudet has been on an incredible run lately of both hits & runs and has flown up both standings. Just when I think I'm doing good, I see these numbers and shake my head. Good work guys!
I didn't get a chance to do the runs for the 1st quarter of the season, but I can tell you that the winner in that category was Al Fry with 17. I'll try to get that one out for next weekend.
Runs scored for the 2nd quarter is closed and that category was won by Rob McCarron!
Yes, this is horribly premature, but whatever - I'm having fun. These are 12 or 15 people tied with 3 runs for second, but for this week we'll just do a top 5. Interesting, but not surprising that everyone other than Roger is on the same team.
So, when you have an average 890 in anything, its damned near impossible to move it upward. However, that's exactly what Brad Managed to do this week. 28 times on base and 25 runs scored. Wow! And he didn't even play the Grisslies this week!
And I've saved my two most favourite for the end. First the Rookies. Not a lot has changed, but that's mostly because I don't have the game sheet from Lahey's game this past week. I could still be in first. He could be 5th? I guess we'll find out next week. However, Jason Chiovitti has been putting together a very nice season.
And finally the most improved ..... I'm hopeful that people see this as me trying highlight good years and not trying to point out anything derogatory about previous performance. Not in any way. I find it interesting that when clubs have a good season there tends to be one or two guys who have their stats spike a little higher. I also find it interesting that we tend to overlook that fact. This is my to call attention where its deserved. I'll give you two examples .....
You'll hear people talk about the Red Dogs playing well and they'll talk about McCarron, Brad, Mike or you'll hear the Rounders mentioned and people go on about Peters, Beechey and Mason. And you know what, you should! They are all great players, no doubt. However, as unfair as it may be to say, we've come to expect that level of play from those guys, they are that good. They are a major part of their teams successes. However, I would argue (because I'm argumentative) that Rick Hjelholt and Al Fry are as responsible for putting put their teams over the top more than their fabulous athletes playing fabulously.
And finally.....
A couple of weeks ago I was talking about people who had scored in every game that their team had played. Well, I don't know if I jinxed people (Dave Fleming thinks I did !!), but that list has become ridiculously short in the last two weeks. How short? Glad you asked. Its a list of 2 people now.
Want to know something even more interesting? They're on the same team. Here are the last two remaining men to have scored at lease a single run in every game their team has played this year:
From your Gruesome Devils:
Jens Lepa (20 Total) 2, 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2
Mike Douglas (22 Total) 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 4, 2
Game Reviews:
Dislocated Joints 9; Gruesome Devils 10
Much like last years Dusty Cleats team, the Dislocated Joints seem destined to forever play one run games. The Joints had no perfect nights at the plate but scored four in the 7th inning to make it close. However they left runners at 1st and 3rd when the game ended. The Gruesome Devils used a 5 run 5th inning to put this one away and were led by perfect nights from Robin Dickson (4/4, 3) and Mike Douglas (3/3, 2). For more on this game, click ===> HERE
Grisslies 14; Dodge City Rounders 18
The Rounders had control of this game from the beginning to end. One highlight of the game that wasn't reported on the BLOG was the "all 60's" inning turned in by Dodge. The inning started with Wayne Bickford catching a line drive for an out. Then Henry Lukassen throwing for an out to Al Nicholl (Bones) at 1st and then Bones caught a pop up for the 3rd out. Nicely done! Despite the fact that only Scott Mason (4/4, 3) and Al Fry (4/4, 2) had perfect nights, it seemed like the rest of the team was 3/4. The Grisslies had perfect nights from three players, Doug Dwyer (5/5, 2); Dave Doucette (4/4, 3) and semi-regular Grisslie, Anicete Goncalves (4/4, 2). For more on this game, click ===> HERE
Dog Catchers 22; Dusty Cleats 2
I feel obligated to get through this one quick. The Cleats had struggled to score runs so far, but their defense had been excellent. Everyone is entitled to an off night. This was the off night. The Dog Catchers were on the other side of the luck equation and they had all of the good kind! Larry Turner led the way going 6/6 with 4 runs scored! Cal Russel joined Larry with a perfect night going 5/5 with 3 runs scored.
Banshees 15; Rusty Rebels 17
This game was close from the start. Each inning ended with a team ahead by no more than two runs. The Banshees had only one perfect batting line and that was from Paul Koolhaas who was 4/4 with 4 runs scored. The winning Rebels had two guys who didn't make outs, Gord Dol (3/3, 2); and Mike Ghaney (3/3, 2).
Red Dogs 5; Beer Bros. 12
I should probably know this, but I think that this may be the first time in team history that the Beer Bros. have been over .500!!! I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm wrong on that. The Beer Bros. had solid nights in this one from Paul Piellusch (4/4, 2); and Al Bales (3/3). The Red Dogs enjoyed perfect nights from Rick Hjelholt (3/3, 1) and Mark Kolsen (3/3, 1).
Brew Jays 10; Lucky Stiffs 1
Sorry, I didn't get the game sheet in time to include this one. Stats from this game have not been included here or on the league site. They will be updated next weekend.
The Tap Masters got off to a quick start in this one and didn't let up. Seemingly everyone on the Masters was 4/5, but the only perfect evening belonged to Tim Schrank who was 5/5 with 2 runs scored. The Units were led by Clayton Avery's 4/4 and 1 run performance and Rob Rumboldt's 4/4 with 2 runs scored.
Dodge City Rounders 11; Hot Tub Woody's 9
Yet another nail bitter for the Woody's. Be sure to tune into the BLOG next wednesday when we discuss how devastating the loss of Jeff Dancey really is to this club. The Hot Tub Woody's got a perfect night from Chris Larkin (4/4, 1); while the Rounders rode the hot bats of Adrian Barry (4/4) and Wayne Bickford (4/4, 3)
Hurtin Units 16; Dislocated Joints 10
The Hurtin' Units continue to be tough to figure out as they knocked off the leagues 1st place team quite convincingly. Clayton Avery (4/4, 1); Craig Slater (3/3, 2); Gord Robinson (4/4, 4); Gord Robertson (3/3, 1) and Rob Rumboldt (4/4, 2) were all perfect on this night for the Units. The Joints had no perfect nights in this one.
Of the games I saw this week, this was the best. It was close, had come backs, had smart defense, power, finesse. A great game. After scoring 3 in the bottom of the seventh and having the tying run on 3rd with no one out, the Tap Masters had a string of line drive bad luck and the Jays wiggled off the hook. Captain Bo Niederhuber (5/5, 3) and Sir Rob Hayward (5/5) led the way for the Jays. The Tap Masters, despite their 30 times on base collectively had no perfect nights.
