Playoffs 2013, Day 2 - On Deck

GAMES:

Dusty Cleats (11) Vs. Gruesome Devils (5):  The Dusty Cleats have fallen to 0-2 dropping a 22-15 decision to the Gruesome Devils who are 1-0.  The Cleats become the first "bubble team" needing to win out to secure a shot at the elimination game on Saturday afternoon.  The possibility of a tie at the top is hampered by being -14 after two games.  Not impossible, but extremely unlikely.  The Devils were slow to get rolling and trailed 4-3 after two.  But the Cleats wouldn't get past the 4 run mark until the 5th inning and it was just too much to overcome by then.

Player of the game:  Lots of choices and I'm only going by the game sheet here, but I'm going to pick Steve "The Other" De Land.  Not only did he pitch his team to a win, but he was 4 for 4 with two runs scored.  Nice night Steve.

Next up for the Dusty Cleats (11) 0-2, Dodge City Rounders (8) 1-0
Next up for the Gruesome Devils (5), Dodge City Rounders (8) 1-0
Blues Brothers (10) Vs. Brew Jays (3):  Our 1st upset of the playoffs!  The Blues Brothers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one and had a 9-1 lead after 3.  The Brew Jays had some fight and steadily narrowed the deficit but ultimately ran out of innings and dropped a 17-10 decision.

Player of the game:  Again, a little tough going by just a game sheet, but I'll go with Kevin Boston who was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored.  Good start to the playoffs Radar (and mates).

Next up for the Blues Brothers (10) 1-0, Dog Catchers (4) 0-0-1
Next up for the Brew Jays (3), Hurtin' Units (13) 0-0

Grisslies (15) Vs. Beer Bros. (7)The agony an ecstasy of this stupid game.  Here is the score after each of the 1st 5 innings with the Grisslies being the first number and the Beer Bros. being the second:  4-4; 7-7; 12-11; 13-11; 15-12.  As we've seen several times already, the underdog got up early.  However, for a fleeting moment it looked like the underdog would pull this off.  I could write volumes on this one.  I won't.  Its too disappointing.  Beer Bros. 21, Grisslies 16.

Player of the game:  Lets see, Stef 5/6, Gere 5/6, Starsky 6/6, Marky Mark 6/6, Rocket Man 5/6.  How did we have a lead?  I will take Steve Ross' 5/6 over Paul and Mark's perfect nights because of the 5 runs scored he also put up.  Now Steve will tell you that he hit crappy, little flares and fly falls that fell in.  True, but he ran hard from the crack of the bat and because of that he ended up with two sliding doubles on those flares and a triple.  Good work.  And to think this is all because I made a diving catch against him in the first inning of the first game of the season when subbing for the Brew Jays.  Grudge.

Next up for the Grisslies (15) 0-1, Draft Kings (1) 1-0
Next up for the Beer Bros. (7), Rusty Rebels (12) 0-2

Rusty Rebels (12) Vs. Hot Tub Woody's (6)The Woody's were simply too much on this night.  The Rebels got out of the gate with a 4 spot in the first inning.  The Woody's answered right back.  The Rebels would get one in each of the 2nd and 3rd; but that wasn't nearly enough to match the Woody's 2 in the 2nd and 7 in the 3rd.  They'd follow that with another 7 in the 4th, an inning that saw 3 inside the park home runs.  They wouldn't need the 7th inning holding a 24 - 17 lead.

Player of the game:  There are some good picks, like Larry Goosney who stood in for lead off hitter extraordinaire, Lance Horgan and delivered 5 hits.  But I like a middle of the order guy in this one.  Blaine Richards had a solid 4 for 4 night and completed it perfectly by scoring 4 runs.  Excellent job Blaine!

Next up for the Rusty Rebels (12) 0-2, Beer Bros. (7) 1-0
Next up for the Hot Tub Woody's (6), Draft Kings (1) 1-0

Red Dogs (14) Vs. Dodge City Rounders (8)The Red Dogs took a different path than the rest of the underdogs.  They got down early and got down big.  Dodge City had a 13-1 lead after two innings and it was effectively over.  Or was it.  The Red Dogs found their bats scoring three in the 3rd, and seven in the 4th and 5th to take and 18-16 lead.  However, they would wind up with the same fate as the other underdogs as the Rounders recovered and walked out with a 23-20 win.

Player of the game:  I was leaning to The Beechey who came in to pitch in relief in this one but 4/5 with 3 runs scored is kind of a ho-hum night for The Beechey.  Instead I'll pick Cal Steeves who was 5/5 with 3 runs scored and played excellent in the outfield.  It must be September!

Next up for the Red Dogs (14) 0-1, Dislocated Joints (2) 1-0
Next up for the Dodge City Rounders (8) 1-0, Gruesome Devils (5) 1-0
Tap Masters (9) Vs. Dog Catchers (4)The Tap Masters scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning of this one.  That might not sound terribly interesting, but it was the only inning in which either team had scored more than two runs.  This game would end with a 9-9 tie and it took the Dog Catchers scoring two in the bottom fo the 7th to make it happen.

Player of the game:  Well, its a tie so we'll take one from each team.  For the Dog Catchers, Lou Conforti has kept on the tear he's been on all season.  He went 4/4 with two runs scored to lead the way for the Dog Catchers.  The big bat for the Tap Masters was supplied by rookie Kevin Clouthier who was 4/4 with 3 runs scored.  Scoring a third of your teams runs is pretty impressive.

Next up for the Tap Masters (9) 0-0-1, Hurtin Units (13) 0-0
Next up for the Dog Catchers (4) 0-0-1, Blues Brothers (10) 1-0
STANDINGS & STATS:

So far we have one upset, maybe two if you count the tie.  There are no 2-0 teams and there are two 0-2 teams that now need to 'win - out'.

I was planning on showing everyone who was hitting .750 or better, but there are 93 people in that category.  I have split it up.  The first list is everyone batting 1.000.

And this list is everyone from .750 to .999

Where the runs scored gets cut off is kind of arbitrary.  Here is everyone with 4 or more.

And here is a lengthy list at 3.

And I thought that this might be interesting as the playoffs unfold and we start getting folks from 20-30 at bats.  Its looks at regular season averages vs. playoff performance.  Its early but there are a couple of surprises.  Well....lets be honest....not so much surprises as validation of what many of us knew.  Seeing Gord Robertson and Cal Steeves on this list just makes me nod and go, "I knew they had a knack for causing trouble in the playoffs".  You'll pick out others I'm sure and the list will evolve as games go by.

BLOG CHANGE

Last night there were tons of hits to the BLOG, 500+ actually.  I know everyone is looking for scores.  I got txts and emails as well.  First off, that is VERY cool!  Second, I can't update the BLOG on the fly from phone effectively so I "Tweeted" out scoring updates every couple of innings.  Well, that only works if you have Twitter.

Until now.

If you look at the top of this page you'll see a black banner running across that looks like this:
If you click on the last tab, "TWITTER FEED" it pop up another BLOG page for you where you can read all the Twitter updates real time.  I tested it, its virtually instantaneous.  The feed looks like this:

The most current one is always at the top.  All you have to do is hit F5 or reload to make sure you have the most current updates.

What's also kind of cool about this is that if you chose to comment on any of the notes your response will show up here for all to see to.

There will be no updates tonight on here between 7:30 and 8:45 ish while the Grisslies play, but after that it will be fast and furious.

Hope this helps.  (oh, there's a scroll bar on the side of the window so you can go back and see the 25 most recent posts.
