MY RANT:

Lets see if I can do this civilly.

I'm pissed off with our town.  Specifically with Parks and Recreation & Culture.  At least I think that's who it is.  I'm not sure, the website isn't exactly the most user friendly ever created.

C2 is fixed.  Late.

The lights at Keogh Park are fixed.  Late.

The hard cost?  Two games per team.

The soft cost?  Nearly three weeks of daily angst for your elected executives.  Daily phone calls and emails to the town, utilities and contractors.  Captains waiting until hours before game times to find out if they were on or not and then needing to notify their teams.  Last minute moving of games to alternate diamonds.

This hasn't been fun for anyone.

It would be easy to sit back now and say "its done, lets just forget about it and move on".

No way.

If I'm the only one angry that 180 (not counting the ladies) tax payers were treated as little more than after thought by the town, then so be it.  I can not make people write letters or make phone calls.  But let us not forget that this is an election year.  We all have power.

The email I received from our current Ward 8 councillor told me that he wasn't aware of a problem.  This was 2 weeks into the issue with the lights.  At least he answered.  It is my understanding that he is not seeking reelection.

But someone will have that seat.  So when a candidate knocks on your door and asks for your vote, ask them about this.  Ask them how they would have handled it.  I know lots of things seem unfair, water prices, garbage taxes, etc.  This is utterly controllable and the onus on the Town to do the simple things instead of having their already taxed constituents do their work.  I say that because its my belief that had it not been for the intervention of a few people in our league and executive that were angry enough to do something, we'd still be waiting for lights.

I've always held vote for any election very private and I'm not prepared to publicly endorse any candidate (yet); however, everyone has a hand on the hammer with their democratic right to vote.  Be selfish.  Use that vote for someone who will take care of what you care about.

End Rant.

The Games

Dodge City Rounders Vs. Blues Brothers - Dodge led 12-1 after 3 innings and struggled to hold off a late surge by the Blues Brothers to claim a 13-11 win.  The Beechey and Gord "Freddy" Robertson were both 4/4 with 2 runs scored for the Rounders while Bob McCullough and John Tessier were 4/4 for the Blues Brothers.  Tessier also scored twice.
Rusty Rebels Vs. Dog Catchers - Hugh Armstrong's 3/3 wasn't enough on this night as the mighty Dog Catchers started their season with a 21-3 win.  Emeil Edwards was 6/6 with 3 runs scored while Harley Sherman and Mike Candy were both 5/5 with 2 and 3 runs scored respectively.
Dusty Cleats Vs. Beer Bros. - The Cleats withstood an injury and displayed a steady offense to prevail 9-8 over the Beer Bros.  It was a slow start for the Beer Bros who scored all their runs in the 6th and 7th innings and the game ended with their tying run (Al Bales) standing a 2nd base. Paul Piellusch was 4/4 with 2 runs in the loss.  The Foerster twins were brilliant in this one, Matt was 5/5 with a run and Lynn 4/4 with a run and their combined defense was excellent as well.  Jim MacDonald was no slouch with the glove either and was 4/4 with 2 runs scored.
Gruesome Devils Vs. Hurtin' Units - Nuke LaLoosh announced his presence with authority. So too did Devils rookie Skippy (Kevin Cavalier) who was 5/5 with 4 runs scored in a 20-2 win over the Units.  Scott Barton clearly has his eyes set on a 4th consecutive batting title, matching Skip's 5/5, 4 night for the winners.  The Units scratched and clawed and had 9 of their 11 guys score runs but Kevin Clouthier's night of 3/4  with 3 runs was the highlight.
Hot Tub Woody's Vs. Sons Of Pitches - The venerable Woody's played host to the franchise 1st game for the Son's of Pitches.  Dave and Paul put together a perfect batting order on this night and over came an injury to Jamie Allan to prevail 14-9.  Doris Casullo enjoyed a perfect night at the plate and registered the franchise's first hit and run!  For the Woody's, Troy Hope is wielding a hot bat early this year going 4/4 and Gord Robinson was 3/3.
Tap Masters Vs. Sliders -  It took another expansion team to bring the Tap Masters back to earth after their 2-0 start.  In their first ever game, the Slider also won in a nip and tuck affair, out lasting the Tap Masters 15-14.  The Sliders were led by Brad Moye and Lance Horgan's 4/4 nights.  The barely beaten Tap Masters had 4/4 games from Jason Jennings and Darrel Hager who is scorching hot to start the season.
Draft Kings Vs. Grisslies - The Grisslies finally broke through with a win and climbed out of last place for the 1st time in 22 months.   Dan Routledge and Cam Clark enjoyed 4/4 nights and Geoff Keogh and Dan Chiason went deep.  Yoke's blast was 6th inning grand slam.  For the 1st time in team history, no one on the Draft Kings had a perfect night, but long time Grisslie, Dave Argue, was 2/3 with 2 runs scored.  The Grisslies won 14-5.
Brew Jays Vs. Dodge City Rounders -  The Brew Jays ran into the buzz saw known as the mighty Dodge City Rounders.  Dodge scored in bunches and the Jays rallied late to make the score respectable.  The Beechey has reached safely in all 9 at bats this season and Wayne Caldwell chipped in going 5/5 in this game.  The Brew Jays, missing Gary Basso immensely, relied on the dependable offense of Rod Duggan who was 4/4.  Make the final 21-15 for the Rounders.
Beer Bros. Vs. Dog Catchers - The final score of this one was 30-13 in favour of the Beer Bros.  While I don't yet have the game sheet for this one, I'd venture to say that a number of Beer Bros. had REALLY good nights.

QUICK NOTES:

We have 114 of our 180 players who started the season who have reached base safely in every game.
We have 88 of our 180 players who started the season who have scored a run in every game so far.

We'll get to names when we're under 20.

STATS
TEAM

As usual we'll start with the standings.  Everyone finally has a game and as expected, we're tightly bunched.  5 teams still have dreams of an undefied season and 4 clubs are looking to get off the snide
.

And a traditional baseball view of standings. So the first thing you'll notice is that the hockey standings (above) show the Tap Masters and Dodge sharing 1st.  But the baseball standings show Dodge City alone in 1st with the Tap Masters not only a 1/2 game back in 2nd but sharing that spot with the Son's Of Pitches, Sliders and Dusty Cleats.

The calculation for GBL (games behind leader) is simple to do but I find it difficult to write.  Here we go.  Take Dodge City and Tap Masters.  (Dodge City wins - Tap Masters wins) + (Tap Masters losses - Dodge City losses) /2  OR (2-2)+(1-0)/2 = 1/2

Not much to say about this except that we have some teams that have wicked quick strike offenses.

So here is one to keep an eye on.  Watch how teams vary from where they are in the standings.  Some teams (Grisslies) are totally deserving of their rank.  11th in both standings and in the Power Rankings.  Then you get teams like the Beer Bros. who are 7th in the baseball standings but 2nd in the Power Rankings.

Individual
NOTE:  None of the individual stats include the Dog Catchers Vs. Beer Bros. game from Thursday at 9:30.  Those will be included in next weeks stats page.

We currently have 19 players batting 1.000.  The Beechey is the only one (so far) to do it over more than one game.

Ya, the Tap Masters have played 3 games, but they're mashing pretty good.

HAGS!!!  nice start, but I see that Peters is already chasing you down.  You'd think hitting .923 would be kinda safe eh?

Runs scored is a category for the real athletes.  Just look at those names!  They're all practically ledgends! (Ok, except one).

Well Kevin....its a good start sir.  as the weeks unfold, we'll see if anyone can give you a run.  13 rookies over .500 already, nice start fellas.

.9 freakin 20 damned 3.  And has anyone seen Laurier?  He looks like he just walked out of the Habs dressing room with a hockey playoff beard.  Greenfield needs a haircut....he's starting to look like Jughead again.  And the Orchid?  So far so good, I think the outfield is safer bro, really.

Mason won when they were rookies.  Edwards as sophomores.  Is it the Beechey's turn or will he fold like a cheap suit?  Lots of good starts guys.

My favourite.  This is everyone who is 300 points or better over last season.
