Week #2 Review

STATS

You wanted some stats?  Well like Jesus said, "I Noah guy".  Incidentally, below all this stuff you'll find game summaries. Here we go!

The first view is standings.  These are traditional baseball standings unlike the traditional hockey standings that we use.  Both have merit, but prefer this.  There are some small variations to our current standings posted on the league website.  As we move further in the year, you'll see how (I feel) its a better representation of where a team is at any given point in time because it considers you games played, not just points earned.  The only wrinkle to real standings are that it has to consider ties.  So this doesn't just go to the 1/2 game, it goes to the 3/4ths of a game:

Next up are individual rankings.  Our top 25 are already on the league website along with all other player averages so there's no need to repeat that.  However I'd like to pay special mention to the people who have started the season perfect.

Grisslie Rookie Jeff Sagert is perfect through 3 games.  If he keeps this up we'll have to give him the Geoff Keogh award (Geoff started last year 24/24).  Last years Colin Mann Award winner Scott Barton has started the year off like he finished last year, which is on fire!  Rob Rumboldt proves that you can hit while falling down, good start Rob!  And John Coopman, Jamie McClean and Simon Smith are perfect through their first games.  Keep it going lads.

For my next trick...errrr...I mean stat, we have total hits.  Of course this is strongly weighted to people have played more games.  I realize that, but it gives a snap show of where people are.  This is a top 25 list because a) it drops a level at #26 so its perfect and b) its probably the only time I'll actually ever sneak into one of these lists.  (Incidentally, I call every time on base a "hit".  Its easier that way)

So...I'm not going to go through this in great detail, but there are a couple of mentionable points.  For instance, the torrid start of Steve Wynnyk is great to see.  As is the nice start for Diamond Jim Rouleau and Gord Dol.  And we have two rookies on the list.  Joining Sagert is the Joints Emeil Edwards.  You can read about his exploits in the game of the week feature from earlier this week.

Next we have the leaders in At Bats. Again, this is strongly weighted to teams that have played more games, but as the season moves along, it will start to reflect a combination of attendance and good play.  I've cut this off at 12 because going to 11 would have put us over 30 players.

Not much news on this one other than Doris hasn't been injured yet, YaY!

Now onto some fun and new stuff.  First lets look at a total view of runs scored.  Again, this one was cut off because going to 4 would have put us in the 30's.

Wow!  Keogh and Routledge are on FIRE!

There's more to come on runs per at bat and runs per hit, but that will have to wait.  For  this week, the last stat was the brain child of our Stat Pack of Radar, Peters, Gyori and Doyle.  I'm not sure who's idea this was per se, but the gist was to do a year over year compare of averages for people.  Of course this wouldn't apply to rookies, or people who skipped last year.  So the base that we're dealing with is 151 players.  I've cut this off at a positive increase of .200 or more points from last years end of season batting average.  I'm sure that number will fluctuate as the season moves along.

So next time someone tells you, "I'm hitting the ball way better this year", you can say; "No, you still suck.  But James Taylor is hitting the ball a lot better this year!"  There you go, a free league wide scouting report on who's hot.  We won't be doing a who's cold version.  I gotta start charging for this.

Week 2 Review

In what was our Featured Game of the Week, The Dislocated Joints rode the pitching of Derryl Gaudet and the sharp defensive play of Terry Doucet, Doris Casulo and Emeil Edwards to a 7-6 victory and a 2-0 record..  Up next week Dislocated will face the 1-1 Lucky Stiffs.  The Tap Masters were tooth and nail in this match, supported by the bang up pitching of Sandy Bell and 3 for 3 nights by Steve Wynnyk and Paul Gyori.  They fell to 1-1.  They move on to play the 2-1 Grisslies in week 3.

The Red Dogs were led in this one by a 4/4 nights by Diamond Jim Rouleau and Rick Hjelhot as they evened their record at 1-1.  Up for them in week 3 three are the 2-0 Dodge City Rounders.  The Dog Catchers scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to get within 1 of the Red Dogs, ultimately losing 13-12 and dropping to 0-1-1 on the young season.  Don Swabuk and Phil Glecoff continue to shine for these Dog's as they both had 3-3 nights with 2 runs scored.  Next for the Dog Catchers are the 0-2 Beer Bros.

It wasn't a very 'typical' game for either team, both of whom pride themselves on pitching and defense.  The Grisslies prevailed on this night by a 17-16 count, largely due to clean up hitter Art Sagert's 4/4 performance with 4 runs scored and 5 RBI.  Also perfect on the night for the Grisslies were Doug Dwyer, Jeff Sagert, Gary Basso and super sub Terry Doucet.  The Grisslies pushed their record to 2-0.  The Units in scoring 16 runs surprisingly only had one person perfect at the plate and that was Jamie Allan who was 3/3.  The Hurtin' Units are busily preparing to play 0-1-1 Hot Tub Woody's.
The Dusty Cleats fell to 0-2 against the Lucky Stiffs despite the best efforts of Kevin Boston, Scott Barton and sophomore Stephane Simard.  Kevin also scored 3 runs.  The Lucky Stiffs outscored the Cleats 13-8 and had a strong performance from Steve Lahey who was 4/4 with 2 runs scored.  The 1-1 Lucky Stiffs now prepare to meet the 0-1-1 Hot Tub Woody's
The Gruesome Devils finally got a game in and managed to beat the Hot Tub Woody's 14-7.  It was a pretty dominant performance by the rookie team until the Woody's scored 6 in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The Devils had some all star nights, led by Jens at 5/5 and Keith Dell and Simon Smith who were both 3/3.  Congratulations on the 1st win boys.  Next week the Gruesome Devils will be dealing with the 1-1-1 Rusty Rebels.  The Hot Tub Woody's had a 3/3 night from Chuck Cragg who also had 2 runs scored.  The Hot Tub Woody's have two games next week.  First the 1-1 Lucky Stiffs and then the 0-1-1 Hurtin' Units.

The Dislocated Joints kept their record perfect eking out a 14-10 win over the Beer Brothers.  Only captain Down Town Billy Brown had a perfect night at the plate in this game.  Word is it that he needed a back brace after this one from being worn out by carrying the team.  Poor bugger.  Meanwhile the Beer Bros. made it close with a 5 run 7th inning.  Super rookie Winston "The Flash" Gayle scored two runs in this one.  The Beer Bros. are looking forward to getting their 1st win on the season and looking to the 0-2-1 Dog Catchers to be the victim.  If that doesn't work they also have the 1-0 Banshees on the docket for next week.
The Tap Masters moved to 2-1 by defeating the Brew Jays 23-16.  Geoff Keogh had a night to remember going 5/5 with 5 runs scored.  Next for these beer swiggers are 2-1 Grisslies.  The Brew Jays had a great night from Jamie McClean who was 5/5 with 2 runs scored.  Having finally played a game the Brew Jays find themselves 0-1.  Next week they'll get two chances to get their first win.  First against the 2-0 Dodge City Rounders and then the 0-2 Dusty cleats.

The Grisslies trailed 7-6 and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out in the seventh.  As it turned out, that's how it would end.  The Grisslies best hitter on the night Jeff Sagert who went 3-3.  The Grisslies are looking forward to starting another winning streak against the tough 2-1 Tap Masters.  The Red Dogs had lots of heroes on this night.  Eric Hipkin was 4/4 as was Rob McCarron.  Gary Cox, Rick Hjelholt and Bob Candy were all 3-3.  The Red Dogs take their 2-1 record against the 2-0 Dodge City Rounders.

The Banshees were the last team to play a game this season and they played with possessed bats.  They outscored a gritty Dog Catchers squad 21-8.  They were led by a perfect 5/5 night by John Coopman who also scored 5 runs.  the Banshees will try to extend their streak facing the 0-2 Dusty Cleats and the 0-2 Beer Bros. next week.  The Dog Catchers had a 4/4 night from Larry Turner but it wasn't enough to overcome the Banshee's attack.  The Dog Catchers will try to get it turned around against the Beer Bros. next week.
