BONUS BLOG - Week 19 Review

UPDATE

This isn't a "real" BLOG, in that there is very little bad humour (although there's always a bit).  This is just a quick review of the games played this week and a running summary of the standings.  The regular BLOG complete with a review of neckties (the mind is mysterious) on Monday.  Please tune in!

A few quick notes:
  • I've renewed the hunt for The Batman.  There is now a Batman tab on the main page (look up), use, live it, figure it out...its killing me!
  • The News & Notes tab has daily standings updates but no game summaries.  It also has a comment box at the bottom if you want to play along at home.  It also has my rants and musings.  Its kind of like Twitter for dummies.  No wait, Twitter is actually Twitter for dummies.
  • Please remember that this is very much unofficial.  Please don't complain to the people who run the REAL WEBSITE out of the goodness of their hears if I've got something wrong.  This is a 'best effort' thing.

Meanwhile....the week that was....
THE GAMES

There were many interesting games this week, many had an impact on the standings and others were previews of some intriguing playoff match ups.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH

Dog Catchers Vs. The Wild - This games was one of the 3 that I thought would be a really good show down as it pitted two teams that were right next to each other in the standings.  The Wild have had a very balanced season (at least from the outside) while the Dog Catchers rode a solid second half to rise up in the standings.  As it turns out, we learned nothing, other than I may have been right that they are pretty even.  At least they were on this night. The game was declared a draw after they were tied when the lights went out.

Dusty Cleats Vs. Brew Jays - The Cleats lost their 21st game of the year.  However, that's not the real story.  The REAL story is they unbelievably had their 10th game decided by 2 or fewer runs.  If you start looking at how many games they lost by 5 or less its staggering.  Anyone who thinks that this team is a push over come playoffs is in for a surprise.  They have literally been one hit away all year.  Meanwhile, the Brew Jays did exactly what they needed to in order to keep the pressure on the Hurtin' Units.  Well done lads!

Brew Jays Vs. Lucky Stiffs  - So, the Brew Jays did what the Grisslies did earlier this year and played a double header.  And like the Grisslies, they split.  Having not seen the game live and only going by second hand (verbal) replays, the game sounded Epic.  Knowing they needed a win to stay alive in the hunt for 1st, the Stiffs mustered a dramatic come back in the bottom of the 7th and overcame a 19-13 deficit.  The loss wasn't catastrophic for the Jays, but it did put them in a hole for a first place finish and kept the Stiffs well in the hunt for 2nd.

Banshees Vs. Grisslies - Another 'lights shortened' game.  This would have to be considered a mild upset as the 8-14-1 Grisslies doubled the 14-10 Banshees, 12-6.  The game was well contested defensively and pulled the Grisslies into a tie for tenth (temporarily) with the Hot Tub Woody's who have a game in hand.  The Banshees who have one game left can still finish 4th if they win their last game and get some help from the Torn Ligaments and Lucky Stiffs.

Dodge City Rounders Vs. Hurtin' Units - The Units came into this game with a ridiculous 17-4-2 record.  The only thing more ridiculous is that stellar record gave them only a two point lead in the standings!  The math is simple, if they win out; they win the regular season.  They took care of business in this game winning the game 14 - 6 over Dodge City who were clearly looking ahead to the date with the Dislocated Joints later in the week.  The win eliminated any mathematical chance that the Lucky Stiffs had of a first place finish and officially made it a two horse race with the Brew Jays.  However, they remain very much alive for second.   Dodge missed a chance to put a little space between themselves and the Red Dogs who remain a point back and still  have a game in hand.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH

Red Dogs Vs. Hot Tub Woody's - Game canceled due to lighting problems. (squirrely, huh?)
Hurtin' Units Vs. Lucky Stiffs  - Game canceled due to lighting problems (was it raining?)

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH

Dislocated Joints Vs. Dodge City Rounders  - This game was a little bit of a white wash.  Dodge City had a 10-0 (I think) lead heading into the bottom of the 7th before allowing the Joints to score a couple of mercy runs making the final 10-2.  Dodge City got the space they needed between themselves and the Red Dogs and with help could push passed the Grisslies AND the Hot Tub Woody's by the end of next week.  The Joints are interesting because, despite their loss, they still have the most games left in the league and are still able to finish 5th overall if they run the table.

Torn Ligaments Vs. Rusty Rebels - The weather was lousy for this one and the Torn Ligaments were buoyed by bringing in some high priced US talent!  But it wasn't like like the Rebels didn't benefit.  Instead of the usual retreads that are brought out to sub on a rainy night, they got Simon Smith.  Yes, there are fortunate teams and then there are the Rebels!  The Rebels won the sub battle and the game by a 16-11 count.  The Ligaments started fast sending 9 men to the plate in the first inning but the Rebels shook off the Rust (sorry) and battled back.  The Rusty Rebels could still finish as high as third and no worse than 4th.  The Torn Ligaments on the other hand can finish either 7th or 8th.

156 games down; 13 to go. See you Monday!
