STATS Week VI

INTRO

Rob:  Something on your mind?
Doug:  Ya.
Rob:  What?
Doug:  I was digging into statistics this week.
Rob:  Oh?  What now?  Are you batting .273 with two outs and a runner on 3rd?
Doug:  Not those kind of statistics.
Rob:  What kind then?
Doug:  Actuary stats.  Insurance risk stuff.  Know what I found out?
Rob:  I can't imagine.
Doug:  I'm statistically the most likely to die.
Rob:  At the hands of your co-captain?
Doug:  No, in an accident.
Rob:  Well that's how I'll make it look anyway.
Doug:  [blinking]
Rob:  I'm joking.
Doug:  I'm not sure.
Rob:  So while we're on the topic of interesting stats, I have one for you.  Did you know that if you were to alter the height of a step by as little as two millimeters that you can cause people to fall?
Doug:  No way.  Two millimeters would have no impact.
Rob: Its true.  I did an experiment as a child.  My father broke his clavical.
Doug:  Is this why your parents put you in bording school?
Rob:  [looking away]  No.  That was because of my work with "lasers".

The regular season is just an experiment anyway.  Right?

Lots to go through.....but first, our sponsor and some news from the league.

Grisslieland This Week

Grisslieland turned into an improptu send off for league favourite and long time 'friend of the Grisslies', Randy Rose.

In attendance were Rob Farah, Doug Dwyer, Doris Casullo, Tito Presenza, Rob McCarron, Mark Banks, Paul Hargreaves, David Polny, Dan Chiasson, Sir Andrew Gee, Dude (because that's his name) and Dave Fleming.  Nice crowd!

After the Randy Rose ride was disassembled and stowed in the u-haul (or y'all as Randy calls it) we reminiced about Randy's time here.

A lot of the guys had some really nice things to say about Randy and it was cool that we had the opportunity to tell him in person.  Let's see what I can remember....hmmmmm.

Doris Casullo:  Randy, at least you're saving a fortune on shampoo!
Rob McCarron:  Being ugly is no crime.  Otherwise Randy would have a life sentence!
Paul Hargreaves:  I was a little afraid of Randy at first.  But he grows on you.  Like mould.
Dan Chiasson:  Randy is a bud.  We both believe in a balanced diet.  A beer in each hand is balanced, right?
Dave Fleming:  Randy can get a little carried away sometimes.  The only problem is that it isn't far enough.
David Polny:  I heard poor Randy had to leave his last job due to illness.  His boss got sick of him!
Dude (because that's his name):  Is it true that Randy's blood type is Coors?
Andy Gee:  Randy doesn't suffer from stress.  But he's a carrier!
Mark Banks:  Randy?  He thinks the internet is something to catch fish in.
Tito Presenza:  Randy has an answer for everything.  Usually not the right answer, but he does have an answer.
Doug Dwyer:  Randy doesn't know the meaning of the word "fear".  Mind you, he doesn't know the meaning of many words.
Rob Farah:  Randy is the definition of tall, dark and handsome.  He's tall and when its dark out, he's handsome!

In what maybe his last Grisslieland appearance of the year, it was great to have Randy there.  We'll all miss you Randy.  You will always be welcomed and you will always have friends here.  We wish you and your family nothing but health and happiness with your move and the next chapter of your lives.

The Week In Review

QUICK NOTES:

  • We lost 10 players who have hit in every game for their team this year and total number of players left sits at 61.
  • There are are now 20 players remaining who have scored in every game.  Here's your list:

  • The league average of runs scored per game dropped to 27.89 total runs.  Over half a run in a single week with 4 games not being played is a pretty big shift.  We're still over 2 and half runs ahead of last year however.  We'll see if the downward trend continues.
  • In the interesting / clever department, the Sliders had used their first sub this week which happened to be Steve Ross.  The Sliders presented Steve with a Subway gift card.  Well done!

THE GAMES

Blues Brothers Vs. Brew Jays - The Blues Brothers climbed over the .500 with a 13-7 win over the Brew Jays.  The Jays 4th ranked defense was up to the challenge holding the Blues Brothers offense to only 13 runs; meanwhile the Blues Brothers had their best defenses game so far this year.  The Blues Brothers had no perfect nights at the plate, but they had a balanced attack with all eleven players getting at least two hits.  Radar was 3/4 with 3 runs.  The Brew Jays were led by Brad Wadden's 4/4 night and Mark Doyle's 4/4 with a run scored.  The Blues Brothers have a chance for a two win week and the Brew Jays still have a chance at splitting the week.

Dodge City Rounders Vs. Draft Kings - The game pitted a very potent offense against an excellent defense.  On this night the offense won.  It didn't look like it was going to work that way early.  Dodge scored two in the top of the first but the Draft Kings immediately answered with two of their own.  Dodge was shut out in the second inning and the Draft Kings got another 2 runs for a 4-2 lead.  The lead was one thing, but the shut out inning was something else.  With the bases loaded and one out the Draft Kings fashioned a very nice Short-to-Second-to-Home innings ending double play (6-4-2).  The game was tied at 4's heading to the 4th inning when the Rounders erupted for 5, with the last two scoring on a towering blast from Rob Rumboldt.  The Draft Kings kept the game close throughout, but everytime they challenged and got close, Dodge seemed to be able score what they needed at will.  The final here was 15-11 for the Dodge City Rounders.

Sons Of Pitches Vs. Gruesome Devils - Rained out.  The game has been rescheduled for July 23rd. the Gruesome Devils will finish the week at 3-4.   The Sons Of Pitches still have another game.

Tap Masters Vs. Hot Tub Woody's - Rained out.  The game has been rescheduled for July 16th.  The Hot Tub Woody's finish the week at 6-1 and the Tap Masters still have another game.

Grisslies Vs. Beer Bros. - Rained out.  The game has been rescheduled for July 14th.  Both teams are done the week with the Beer Bros. at 4-3 and the Grisslies at 3-4.

Hurtin' Units Vs. Sliders - Rained out.  The reschedule date hasn't been accepted yet.  The Hurtin' Units conclude the week at 0-6 while the Sliders still have a game.

Rusty Rebels Vs. Dodge City Rounders - This game had the #4 team from last weeks power rankings swapping sunflower seeds with the 14th ranked team.  I guess thats why we play the games, huh?  This game looked pretty "slug fest-ish" with a 10-9 score in favour of the Rebels after 3 innings.  But pitching and defense took over for both clubs over the final four innings.  Steve Ross would score in the 4th, Mark Banks in the 5th and Andy Gee, Peter Hollmann and Hugh Armtrong in the 6th to give the Rusty's 15 runs on the night.  The Rounders could only muster one run after 3rd, a 4th inning solo blast by Scott Mason, his second fence clearer of the night.  That made the final 15-10 for the Rusty Rebels.  Ross was 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored in the win while Beechey and Mike Sheehan were 4 for 4 and 3 for 3 respectively in the loss.

Blues Brothers Vs. Dusty Cleats - The Cleats have been waiting patiently to get healthy and it looks like they're finally there.  The put their 2-5 record up against the Blues Brothers 4-3 mark.  The Dusty Cleats got out of the game well in this one counting four in the 1st, six in the 2nd and four more in the third to take 14-6 lead after 3.  The Blues Brothers would chip away.  Two in the fourth on runs by Kevin Boston and Bob Pearse.  Two more in the 5th by Doug DeLand and Bob McCullough.  The Blues trailed 15-10 entering the bottom of the 7th and DeLand would single and score and be followed by Tom Ball who did likewise to narrow the gap to 15-12 with no one out.  However, the Cleats would get 3 of the next four batters to escape with the 15-12 win.   Tom Hollmann for the Cleats led all batters in this one going 4/4 with 2 runs.

Sliders Vs. Dog Catchers - The Sliders entered this game trying to bounce back from their only loss of the season.  They had to do it against the leagues best offense that was scoring at ridiculous rate of 20 runs per game.  We'll cut to the chase in this one.  The Sliders played well but dropped a 19-14 decision.  Now lets put the Dog Catchers in perspective.  They were the home team and the game was called for time with the sixth being the last inning.  Therefore the Dog Catchers only actually batted in 5 innings in this one and STILL counted 19 runs.  I don't think a team has scored at this sustained rate since the 2011 Dusty Cleats.  Emeil Edwards, Steve Lahey, Larry Turner, Rick Hjelholt, Mike Candy and Bob Candy were all perfect at the plate for the Dog Catchers who narrowed the gap by a 1/2 game on the idle Hot Tub Woody's.

Draft Kings Vs. Sons Of Pitches - The Draft Kings squared their record at 3-3 last week, primarily due to their leagues 5th best defense and some timely hitting.  I subbed for them in this game and saw the defense first hand.  They're good with the leather.  But the timely hitting was absent in this game.  The Sons Of Pitches were reeling from 4 straight losses and looking to right the ship.  After a 3 up 3 done 1st inning, the SoPs got on the board with 3 in the second and 6 in the third for a 9-0 lead.  The Kings sent 4 men to the plate in the 1st, five in the 2nd, five in the 3rd, four in the 4th, five in the 5th and five more in the 6th but couldn't score a single run.  The Draft Kings narrowly avoided being shut out when Dave Argue stole a run on an infield ground out with one out in the 7th.  Captain clutch, Cliff Stacey would score a second run to make the final 12-2 for SoP who were in complete control of this game.  Bob Vienneau and Cliff Stacey were both 3/3 in the loss.  Vince Basacchi was 3/3 in win, but the real story was super rookie Mike Iacoucci who made his debut in this one.  On the second pitch in saw in the league he tripled to the gap.  Next time up he homered to right.  Next time up he doubled off the wall.  Too bad he didn't get another at bat to try for the cycle, but nonetheless, he was 3/3 with a run.  Great start Mike!

Brew Jays Vs. Tap Masters - The final game of the week is usually the best one.  Case in point.  The Brew Jays record belies their play and the Tap Masters are full value for their 2nd place tie in the league standings.  The Tap Masters would own a 9-1 lead over the Brew Jays after the top of the 3rd, but cue the comeback.  The Jays 4th ranked defense got really stingy.  They gave up 2 in the 4th on Darrell Hager's 3rd run of the game and Scott Peter's 2nd, and then nothing over the final 3 innings.   Meanwhile, Brad Wadden and Jim Smith would count in the 3rd to make it 9-3.  Bill Sallustio would score in the 4th to make it 11-4.  Wadden again in the 5th to trail 11-5.  Glen Tinkler, Chuck Vanya, Bob Vaughan and Al Hayward in the 6th to narrow the gap to 11-9.  In the 7th, Bo Niederhuber would open with a ringing single to center and move to 3rd when Mark Doyle would follow with another single.  Bo would score to make it 11-10 and Doyle would be forced at 2nd.  The game would end with the tying and winning runs on base as the comeback was two single away from being complete.  Bo was 4/4 with a run in this one.  Chuck, Bob and Al were all 3/3 with a run.  Darrell Hager continues to pound, going 4/4 with 3 runs scored.

The Beer Cup

The Beer Cup is in its 2nd year.  Last years champs, the Dodge City Rounders retained the Beer Cup to start the season and defended it twice by beating the Blues Brothers and the Brew Jays.  The Sons Of Pitches then defeated Dodge to take it over before losing it to the Rusty Rebels.  The Rebels were defeated by the Tap Masters.  The Tap Masters, who waited for a year to play for the cup were only able to retain it for a single game as they fell to the Beer Bros. who now own the cup until they get beat.

The holders of the Beer Cup at the end of the season receive both the cup and 12 beer tickets at the banquet.

Next week the Beer Bros will try again to become the second team to defend the Beer Cup this season when they face the hot hot Hot Tub Woody's!

Subs

The list of different subs continues to grow!  This is great for everyone.  Remember to contact Rob at Robert.Farah@sympatico.ca and let him know days you're available to play.  That will get you to the top of the list on any given day, provided that your ranking is required.

PLEASE, let your captains know when you can't make it to a game. Captains are getting caught short with no shows.  This is starting to happen with regularity and makes it difficult on your team and captains.

STATS
Team

Your week 6 standings which, of course, can also be found at the league site, www.tottenhamoldtimers.ca

The most obvious difference in the standings is that the Woody's are actually alone in 1st by a 1/2 game.  2nd, the Sliders move up....everything else is similar.

Runs continue to be scored at a quicker rate than last year.

So, with 4 games missed this week, we didn't see the wild movements in the rankings.  In fact, 10 teams didn't move at all!  The Rounders dropped a spot and the Draft Kings two spots.  Moving up one each were the Blues Brothers, Dusty Cleats and Sons Of Pitches.

The fact that the Dog Catchers played and maintained their .738 team average is staggering.

Its probably too early for this, but it helps explain the loss column a bit.  This shows the magic number for the Woody's or the Tragic number for everyone else.  First off, everyone makes the playoffs, so this is nothing to get bent about.  So you'll see that the Hot Tub Woody's magic number is 15 against the Tap Masters, Dog Catchers, Dodge City Rounders and Sliders is 15.  What does that mean?  For example, it means that any combination of Woody's wins and Tap Masters losses that add up to 15 will eliminate the Tap Masters from being able to get 1st place overall.  The same would apply for the other teams at the 15 mark.  What's (somewhat) interesting is that this is the 1st week where the 1st place team is in control, which means that their games remaining are equal to the Tragic number.  So they could 'theoretically' win out and capture 1st.

INDIVIDUAL

Look out for Lahey who continues to charge!!!  And Bob Candy is friggin' amazing!

Q1 is now closed.  Congrats to Skip, Matt and Mr. Lahey on being in the top 3 over the first 6 games of the year.

As usual, some crazy starts here. 4 captains in the list of who's hot in the 2nd quarter, thats nice to see!

A three way lead at the top, this is fun!  And this list if full of proven run scoring machines!

Q1 for runs is closed.  Congrats, again, to Skippy, Neil and Scott. On to Q2!

Some terrific starts here, but me thinks that Lahey is on a mission!!!

An Mr. Lahey has taken over the hit parade too.  But this will fluctuate based on games played as the year continues and as long as Steve, Bob, Skip, Neil and Emeil stay hot.  There are other players in here, but its tough to make up ground in this category.

Laurier continues to hang onto his At Bat lead and he's hitting great while doing it!

Normally, I don't include folks until they have enough AB's to qualify.  This list is an exception.  Congrats to Mike Iacoucci who made this debut this week with a double, triple and home run.  WoW!!!

Hags is NOT cooling off!  I think Nyers and Plante are going to have something to say about this before its all said and done.

You'd think hitting .800 would be good enough, eh?  Well it would be good enough for 5th against these guys.

Hi Bob.  5th in the league in hitting, 1st in most improved.  Nice season!  Hopins and Dancey both on the list, might help explain the explosive Woody's too.

Week 7 games to watch!

Hot Tub Woody's Vs. Beer Bros:  The Hot Tub Woody's six wins have come at the expense at teams with a combined record of 15-30 (.333).  The Beer Bros. 6th ranked offense and 7th ranked defense will be their stiffest challenge to date.

Grisslies Vs. Hurtin' Units:  There's a couple of reasons for this one.  It'll be the 1st Grisslie game in 6 years that will have neither Rob or Doug in the lineup as we're both committed to graduation day.  See if the Units can get off the snide.

Dodge City Rounders Vs. Dog Catchers:  Can Dodge score with the Dog Catchers?  They'll need to hang up 21 runs to beat them.

Beer Bros. Vs. Blues Brothers:  Two very similar teams statistically.  Lets see if one can get on a roll.

Hot Tub Woody's Vs. Draft Kings:  Depending on their Mondays result, the Woody's will either be looking to go 8-1 or 7-2.  The Draft Kings defense has been stellar thus far and are looking to awaken the bats!
