The Beer Cup Week 11
What????...
Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not surprised that they won. I am shocked however that they remembered how to play! I'm stunned that they got a game in without snorkels! I'm astonished that Red was able to pitch with his fingers all pruned up. I'm simply astounded that Jim MacDonald was able to find a dry shirt! Startled that Cam Clark could get to the game without a canoe this time.
These poor buggers have seen more water than Mark Spitz. They should rename the team the Fred Astaires because they've been singing in the rain all season. And despite it all, they've managed to stay within a game of .500 and take possession of the Beer cup!
Well done lads! Now for your next trick, you need to try and retain it next week against the mighty Red Dogs who've already held it once this year! Good luck fellas.

- This edition is a little slimmer. I'm heading north to visit my mother who is convalescing from a heart attack earlier in the week. Should be back in time for Tuesday game but if I'm not, you'll know where I am. There are a few stats missing this week but we'll catch up soon enough.
- Rumour has it that Kevin Hollingshead was instrumental in turning a triple play this week. A tag, a force and throw to 1st if the story is correct. Well done! (Too bad you didn't come through with the valet parking or I would have said more about it!)
- Sure, Kevin did nice work on the triple play, but I got the fourth out of an inning twice this week. You're welcome. (my head wasn't quite all there)
- A very sporting play by The Beechey when he was catching for his team against the Tap Masters on Tuesday. People notice that stuff....well done.
- 3 weeks in a row now that we've had a different team in 1st place. First the Gruesome Devils followed by the Brew and now the Draft Kings. They can all mash. However, they are the 3 best defenses in the league on a per game average. That can't be a coincidence.
- The Beer Bros. are skidding a bit (5-7-1), but its hardly a tragedy. They've got good players and will bounce back. But their record brings up an interesting fact. Last year Dave Fleming was on the 18-6 1st place Brew Jays. The year before he was on the 22-2 1st place Dusty Cleats. Dave is one loss away from matching the total of the previous two years.
- Guess what....Chuck Cragg has now scored a run in 15 consecutive games!
- I don't think we lost any of our consecutive game hitters this week, still at 33.
- The Hurtin' Units are .500 at 7-7. They've won 2 in a row once. They've lost two in a row once. remarkably consistent. And five of their seven losses were by a single run.
The Grisslies sponsor, Grisslieland hosts a driveway stop by on Friday nights. This week featured most of the usual cast of characters, some impromptu karaoke, an introduction to some hard core reggae (Buju Banton style), conversations about high-school trips to Florida and tons and tons of baseball talk.
Congrats to Tim Schrank, amateur mechanic and now a Grisslieland veteran!
STATS
The Draft Kings and their stupid tie are in first place with a pretty big margin at this point. I think the Grisslies will finish around 12th. Yes, I realize that we've been in 15th place since opening night....you heard it hear first.
While runs per game are increasing as the year moves on, its taking more hits to score those runners.Last week there 4 teams in the league that were able to score with less than a hit on average. We're down to only 2 now. What's up with the Grisslies? We're nearly under 3 hits per run!
One of my favourite things to watch is who slots into what positions at the end of the year. I'm well aware that everyone makes the playoffs, its just fun. This year won't be so much. The way the schedule reads right now with make ups, we will have 9 teams having completed the season on August 28th. With only 2 days of ball left (over two weeks) The Gruesome Devils, Draft Kings, Beer Bros and Dodge City Rounders will all have a single game left and the Blues Brothers will have 3 to play!!!
Unless one of the Gruesome Devils, Draft Kings or Brew Jays run away and hide with this season, we could have no spots decided with two days left to play. And its possible that we have 8 or 10 spots still open on the last day.
Oh, our tragic number is 3. The Grisslies have two games next week against lousy competition (Gruesome Devils & Brew Jays). If the unbelievable happened and we dropped them both and the Draft Kings got a flukey win against the Dodge City Rounders we would be eliminated from 1st place. The Red Dogs only have one game this week so they'll stay alive regardless!
Lucky Red Dogs.
Individual Stats
Yes, the Lepa special, led by JENS LEPA! Who would have guessed?
I've been doing some math on what other people would have to do to catch Scotty B. Its not pretty. Dickson, Hayward, Doucet and Stike would have the toughest time due to their higher number of at bats making it more difficult to make a big push.
The leaders is starting to separate itself from the average leaders a bit. Half the people on the hit list aren't on the average list. Both are wicked dangerous hitter.
Mikey is either going to come back or fall of this list around game 19. Until then, he's owning it! Hayward continues to amaze and is the only other player above Cudnik's pace from the previous season.
The Hayward show again! I hope Robbie Hayward comes back next year and we can have 3 generations in the league!
This is getting to be very interesting. I thought last year with the top 3 averaging one short of 2 runs a game for a full season was awesome. It looks sure to fall now. Richards, Lahey and Pendlebury are all on pace to score 54 runs and I can't see them all going cold at the same time.
Its not over by any means, but Brad's not giving it away. 3 Grisslies on the list ... you'd think we'd have more wins. Lets see. 3 good sophomores. Our Rookie is 3rd in that category. We have the 2nd most improved player in the league with Hayward. What could the problem be? Oh, what's that you're saying. Me? Maybe.
