The Dislocated Joints remain owners of the Beer Cup.
I've learned this about the Joints. They don't share well. They probably stole other people's buckets in the sand box when they were kids. This week's victims were the Hurtin' Units in a rain soaked affair.
Teams that have held the Beer Cup(3)
- Beer Bros.

- Dog Catchers
- Dusty Cleats

- Friggin' rain! I'm so sick of rain and bad field conditions being the lead story. We got in the 1st game Monday night before a down pour halted game 2 and prevented game 3 from ever starting. Here are the current rainout standings!
- Blues Brother (4)
- Gruesome Devils, Grisslies (3)
- Beer Bros., Brew Jays, Hurtin' Units, Hot Tub Woody's, Tap Masters, Dodge City Rounders (2)
- Draft Kings, Dislocated Joints, Rusty Rebels, Dusty Cleats (1)
- Dog Catchers, Red Dogs (0)
- Defense was the order of the day on Tuesday night and its starting to be a trend around the league. At the end of Tuesday night's games we had 4 clubs allowing less than 10 runs a game. Draft Kings (8.88), Brew Jays (9.13), Grisslies (9.71) and Tap Masters (9.86). I haven't seen more than two teams there before this year.
- Wednesday? More rain. The Units and Joints persevered through a lengthy rain delay and got the game in. God love 'em. The night cap was a little less soggy and that went without incident.
- We now have only 55 players left who have hit in every game of the season so far.
- So its time to reveal the players remaining who have scored a run in every game. The longest streak last year was Jens Lepa, maybe he can remind me how many games it was. (I think it was 14). Here are the 89 players, club and number of games. Congrats boys....lets see who can take a run at Jens!
- Brad Young, Dog Catchers (9)
- Jim Rouleau, Draft Kings (8)
- Chuck Cragg, Draft Kings (8)
- Chris Larkin, Hot Tub Woody's (8)
- Scott Barton, Hot Tub Woody's (8)
- Will Goodin, Hot Tub Woody's (8)
- Anicete Goncalves, Rusty Rebels (7)
- Terry Doucet, Dislocated Joints (6)
STATS
TEAM STATS
In the team sections we have a couple of things this week. First the non traditional and traditional standings.
Well both sets of standings have a couple of questions begging to be asked. 1. What the hell happened to the Dog Catchers. It looked like they were gonna run the table at one point. 2. What the hell happened to the Rusty Rebels? Too cool to play with the Grisslies and Red Dogs?
Okay, we're introducing two new stats this week because .... well .... there's no good reason really. But I find that my search for something 'more telling' just brings more attention to the Grisslie offensive woes.
This is kinda interesting. Its speaks (I think) to the ease at which some teams score runs and the difficulty other teams have. For instance, the second hit of inning will produce a run for the Gruesome Devils, Woody's, Hurtin' Units, Draft Kings, Joints and Tap Masters. That's pretty potent.
We said last week that the Brew Jays have a lot of guys hitting will but the runs aren't showing up (yet). That's born out here in that they need more than 2 and a 1/2 hits to score a single run. Of course, as bad as that sounds, it could be worse. Like 3.22 hits per run.
Oh yes, another telling stat. We don't keep track of batting averages or runs scored by subs. However when a sub scores in your game it quite obviously counts to the total. We end up in a disparity at the end of the year where the team runs scored out weight the total runs by the individuals on the team. The difference between the two totals are the runs scored by your subs.
Why does that matter? Might not. But here's my theory. The more runs scored by subs = the more attendance issues your club which could lead to a false value of the team. Or maybe not. Impressive so far is that the Woody's, Cleats, Red Dogs and Rebels have had all of their runs scored by their own players. I left the Gruesome Devils and Beer Bros. off this for this week because I didn't have their stats in time, but they were middle of the pack when I was testing this.
The team that has had the most run AND highest percentage of runs scored by subs? Yeah. Again. The Grisslies. So if my theory is right, we may not be quite as good as our 1-7 record and are being propped up by subs.
Lets take it a bit further. The Woody's have scored more runs than anyone at 148 and every single one by one of their draft picks. They are exactly the team you're seeing on the field. The Draft Kings, favoured by many to win the season (if not more) have had 4.67% of their runs scored by subs. Granted, that's only 5 runs, but they've also had a tie and 2 one run wins. Are they who you think they are?
I think there might be something to this.
INDIVIDUAL STATS
So our top 8 in runs for the second quarter. I know a lot of you are going, "seriously?". Here is the deal. I'm pulling data from everyone's games #7-#12. It discounts what you did in the 1st quarter. We are all on the same footing. At the top you'll see the leader of the second quarter from last year (Robert McCarron) and the winner of this year's 1st Quarter (Brad Young). And Brad Young, so far is the only one on this list who didn't produce his monstrous totals against the Grisslies
This is the same as above with one exception. You have collect a minimum, of 3 at bats per game between games 7 and 12 to qualify. Not its not a league rule, its a me rule. We have a rookie on the list in Peter Hayward and can see that Paul Gyori and (for those about to rock) Bill Sallustio are on nice rolls! And Randy Rose has probably knocked over 8 pitchers in the last week.
Overall top 10 in batting. A more comprehensive list can be found on the league website. Scotty has almost caught up to last years ludicrous average. But he's got company from Rick Hjelholt and Terry Doucet. At this point we still have 10 guys over .800, and holy crap, one is a Grisslie!!!
If you're looking for the rest of the Woody's, they're all tied for 11th place. Brad Young who's had a tremendous season thus far is on pace to break Jens mark from last year by only 2. This is still very much a race.
If my math is right (sketchy) Brad could bread Scotty's mark from last year by 9!
Runs scored mark (total for the year) of 47 seems destined to fall and fall LARGE. Brad is on pace for 61 runs!
Barton has been a furious on base guy for a few years now. This year its the right collection of bats in the right order and the production is incredible. Having teammates as #1 and #2 in this category is going to be tough for clubs to stop.
I like it where there are different people leading these categories. Riddle me this. Yoke's hits are more dangerous than Barton's but Barton's ABs are more dangerous than Yoke's. Will Goodin' Hunting....best nickname EVER! I think that was courtesy of Mr. Gere.
And always, saving my favourite for the end. First the rookies. Tricky Rickey Greenfield shot back up to .700 this week with a 5/5 night. And Kevin Clouthier (I just realized the spelling error in the table below, I'll fix for next week) managed to survive rookie night!
And finally the most improved from last year to this. Its clear that Olliffe sandbagged last year so he could win the category this season. This isn't quite as clean as it should have been. I'll fix for next week. Charilie has retired for the season and Matt Foerster doesn't have quite enough at bats to quality yet.
