PLAYOFFS, Day 1 - The First Pitch

GAMES

The playoffs started with the #1 seeds from Pools A&B hosting the #4 seeds.  The Hurtin' Units were 0-2 against the Brew Jays during the regular season dropping two, one run decisions (22-21 and 13-12).  Meanwhile the Hot Tub Woody's had beaten the Red Dogs twice during the season, both by 12-7 counts.

(4) Hurtin' Units @ (1) Brew Jays - It didn't take long for us to have our first upset of the playoffs.  About an inning actually.  The Units stormed out of the gate scoring 7 in the 1st.  They liked it so much the did it again in the 2nd.  Then it just got silly.  The Brew Jays were without Duggan at short, but even still, James Taylor seemed to have them hitting off the wrong foot all night as he counted 3 stikeouts while cruising to victory in the opener.  For the Jays, the Foersters both had great nights going 4/4, with Matt scoring 2 runs and Lynn 1.  For the Hurtin' Units, six guys had 5 or more hits.  The best nights belonged to Clayton Avery and Gord Robinson who were both 6 for 6.  Clayton scored 5 runs while Gord had a paltry 4.

(4) Hot Tub Woody's @ (1) Red Dogs - The Woody's got out to a quick start scoring 4 in the 1st inning and the strong number of specataors had the feeling that we were about to see a repeat of the first game upset.  But the Red Dogs would have none of that!  The Red Dogs would score 6 of their own in the 1st and the see saw affair was on.  The Woody's eked out a run in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game at 14.  They then got the vaunted Red Dogs offense in order in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the tie.  The bulk of the Red Dogs offense came from Rob McCarron, (4/4 with 3 runs), Gary Cox (4/4 with 2 runs) and Brad Youngs (4/4 with 2 runs).  The Woody's had 5/5 nights from Brad Moye who chipped in 3 runs and Jeff Handly who scored twice.

STANDINGS
A quick note about standings:
  • I've included the scores underneath the standings as a reference point.
  • Remember that +/- will not necessarily equal the runs scored minus runs against as there is a maximum of 7 per game. This is why the scores are included so you can see how we got there.
  • Tie breaker sequence is:  (1) Total Points (2 for win, 1 for tie),  (2) +/-, (3) Least Runs Against, (4) Most Runs Scored, (5) Head To Head, (6) Regular Season Standings
  • As always, these standings are a 'service' and my best effort.  Apologies in advance if any errors are made.

ON DECK

The Playoffs will reach full swing Tuesday with 6 games. At this point the Dog Catchers are the only team to not have played a game.

The Banshees haven't lost to the Tap Masters this season, beating them 19-14 and tying at 11's.

The Dusty Cleats had good regular season success against the Gruesome Devils ending up a +3 in splitting a 9-5 win and a 12-11 loss.

The Rusty Rebels had no wins, but close games against the #1 seed Dislocated Joints. They dropped 15-14 and 16-11 contests.  This will be one of two games to take place at Keogh Park tonight.

The Hurtin' Units (1-0) fared the same against the Grisslies losing 17-16 and 9-5 but will try to ride the momentum of their stunning victory over the Brew Jays to start the post season.

The Hot Tub Woody's in the 4 spot, split with the two seed Beer Bros., winning 9-5 and losing 8-4. They will try to keep their spirits up after a tough tie against the Red Dogs in the opener.

The last game on the docket is the Lucky Stiffs facing the Dodge City Rounders. Again, this was a split and close with the Stiffs losing a 10-9 and then rebounding to win 10-7.  This, of course, for anyone who looks at the REAL schedule, is the second game to take place at Keogh this evening.
