BONUS BLOG: Week 18 Review (playoff standings)

INTRO
What I don't always do a good job of is explaining things.  I assume that everyone is just thinking along with me.  Sometimes that makes things quicker....other times it just leaves people confused.  I've been doing daily standings with the understanding that they are unofficial in an effort to keep people informed of where they sit.  I think its been reasonably well received based on the questions I get and the general interest.  Where I probably dropped the ball a bit is explaining the tie breaker situation.  What you read below is from our constitution which is available on the league website.  What is in italics are my notes.  This is how ties are broken if two or more teams have the same number of points at the end of the year:

i.   Head to head record.  (My understanding of this is games won ONLY.  Example.  if the Hurtin' Units beat the Banshees by 2 and lost to the Banshees by 1.  This has them tied on this category as we only use the wins, losses and ties and NOT runs scored. )
ii.  If still tied, by the highest number of wins in the overall league statistics. (If two teams have the same number of points, the team that got there with the fewest ties wins)
iii.  If still tied, by the highest number of runs for in the overall league statistics.
iv.  If still tied, by the lowest number of runs against in the overall league statistics.
v.   If still tied, by a coin toss. (unclear who actually tosses the coin, who calls it, or whether it needs to be called before its thrown or called in the air...I'm sure it'll work out.)

STANDINGS
(UNOFFICIAL)

Based on the following results: Beer Bros. Vs. Dodge City Rounders; Hurtin' Units Vs. The Wild (tie); Dislocated Joints Vs. Brew Jays; Lucky Stiffs Vs. Torn Ligaments; Rusty Rebels Vs. Grisslies; Dusty Cleats Vs. Banshees; Dislocated Joints Vs. Dog Catchers; Red Dogs Vs. Dusty Cleats; The Wild Vs. Hot Tub Woody's.

NOTES:  The Rusty Rebels (12) and Red Dogs (11) are tied in points.  The Red Dogs moved ahead in the standings based on tie-break rule one (i).  The Dog Catchers (5) and Brew Jays are tied in points.  The Dog Catchers moved ahead in the standings based on tie-break rule two (ii).

And what does this mean?

Please remember that this is unofficial and won't be LOCKED until you read it on the league website!!!
  • First, pool A would appear to be set at this point and its strong with a combination of the best team in the league, with teams that have had a very good second half and Dodge City who no one would dare take for granted.
  • Pool B is waiting for the top and bottom to round out and we wont' know until next Tuesday.  More on scenario's below.
  • Pool C at this point only contains the Wild.  Isn't that just like them to be first in the pool???  The rest will be decided on Tuesday next.
SCENARIOS

Well boys and... I guess more boys?

We have three games on Tuesday September 6th, involving five teams; the results of which will impact 6 teams....got it?  Oh, I suppose it will also sort of impact the four teams that have secured spots in Pools "B" and "C" (or Pools "2" and "3", I'm not sure what they're actually named).

The only thing we know for certain (yet unofficially) is that Pool "A" is set.  The Dodge City Rounders, Rusty Rebels, Hot Tub Woody's, Brew Jays and Dusty Cleats comprise a formidable "A" pool.  On to Tuesday's games.

Banshee's Vs. Dislocated Joints:  If the Banshee's lose or tie this game, they finish in 10th and end up pool "C".  If they win and the Hurtin' Units lose, the Banshee's will end up in 9th spot and coincidentally still wind up in Pool "C".  9th place would get an extra home game, but in the grand scheme of things, it result isn't hugely relevant.  For the Joints, they currently DO NOT hold the tie breaker with the Beer Bros., so a loss here would assure them of 14th place and a trip to Pool "B".  If the Joints win and Beer Bros. either lose or tie they will end up in 13th place and in Pool "C".

Lucky Stiffs Vs. Hurtin' Units:  If The Lucky Stiffs lose this game it does nothing other than make their next game more interesting and keep me up later.  If they win, they will finish in 2nd place and relegate the Grisslies to 3rd, finally settling those two slots.  For the Hurtin' Units.  A loss here coupled with a Banshees win will push them down to 10th.  A win, regardless of what the Banshees do will secure 9th place.  Like the Banshees, either scenario finds them in Pool "C".

Beer Bros. Vs. Lucky Stiffs:  For the Beer Bros. A loss along with a Dislocated Joints win puts them in 14th and in Pool "B".  A win, regardless of what the Joints do (barring the Joints winning and scoring 50+ runs) will assure the Beer Bros. of 13th and a trip to Pool "C".  If the Stiff's lost their previous game, this one one will be used to determine 2nd and 3rd.  If they win this one they get 2nd.  If they get their second loss on the night they get 3rd.

Questions?  Clear?

STATS
Your league standings should appear on the website sometime this weekend as per usual.  However, I'm going to wait to submit the final player STATs until the last 3 games are done Tuesday.

Once Tuesday passes, there will be a new look at stats and standings every day until the playoff start which won't be long.  I'll look at the season as whole, have a few polls, take a look at the 1st and second half from a team and individual perspective and try to look for trends.

I'm also still looking for volunteer correspondents to report on playoff games.  This will only (mostly) apply to the games during the week as not too much is missed on the weekends.

Cheers.
